Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a group of symptoms that occur together even without visible damage or signs of disease in the GI tract. It is usually characterized by chronic abdominal pain and changes in bowel movements, such as constipation and diarrhea.

IBS diagnosis includes the doctor reviewing your symptoms, inquiring about your medical history and having you undergo a physical examination. Doctors may recommend medications, diet changes, lifestyle adjustments and mental health therapies as treatment options.
