Understanding Varicose Veins
What Are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins often seen just under the skin of the legs. They happen when the valves in the veins weaken, causing blood to pool and the vein to stretch.
This is a common condition and can range from mild discomfort to more serious circulation issues.
Symptoms of varicose veins can include:
- Bulging, visible veins in the legs
- Leg heaviness or aching
- Swelling, especially after standing
- Burning or itching near the veins
- Restless legs or cramping at night
In some cases, they may lead to skin changes or ulcers.
Diagnosis starts with a physical exam. Your provider may also use:
- Ultrasound imaging – to look at how well blood is flowing
- Venous mapping – to assess the size and function of the veins
These tests help identify the best treatment approach.
Many people find relief with simple changes, like:
- Wearing compression stockings
- Raising the legs throughout the day
- Staying active to encourage blood flow
If symptoms are more serious or cause discomfort, treatments may include:
- Laser therapy
- Minimally invasive vein procedures
- Sclerotherapy – sealing off the vein
These options are typically outpatient and require little downtime.
