What is an EMG?

Electromyography (EMG) is a test that measures how well your muscles and nerves work together. It helps diagnose conditions that cause weakness, numbness, or tingling.

Why is This Test Done?

Your doctor may recommend an EMG to check for:

  • Nerve damage or pinched nerves
  • Muscle disorders
  • Neuropathy or nerve dysfunction
  • Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or ALS

What to Expect During the Test

  • Small electrodes are placed on the skin or a thin needle is inserted into the muscle.
  • The test records electrical signals as your muscles move.
  • You may feel mild discomfort, but the test is generally well tolerated.
  • The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Understanding Your Results

Your doctor will analyze the results to check for nerve or muscle problems. If an issue is detected, further testing or treatment may be recommended.
