What is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a painless test that records electrical activity in the brain. It helps doctors diagnose conditions like seizures, migraines, and other neurological disorders.

Why is This Test Done?

Your doctor may recommend an EEG to:

  • Detect seizure activity
  • Evaluate migraine symptoms
  • Diagnose epilepsy or other brain disorders
  • Monitor brain activity after an injury

What to Expect During the Test

  • Small sensors (electrodes) are placed on your scalp.
  • The electrodes detect brain wave patterns.
  • The test is painless and usually lasts 30 to 60 minutes.
  • You may be asked to relax, breathe deeply, or look at flashing lights during the test.

Understanding Your Results

Your doctor will review the brain wave patterns recorded during the EEG. If abnormal activity is found, further evaluation or treatment may be recommended.
