Coronary Angiography, Angioplasty & Stenting
What Are These Procedures?
Coronary angiography is a test that uses X-ray imaging to see your heart’s blood vessels. If a blockage is found, your doctor may perform angioplasty to open the artery and place a stent to keep it open.
When Are These Procedures Recommended?
Your provider may suggest this if you have:
- Chest pain (angina)
- Abnormal stress test results
- Known coronary artery disease
- Shortness of breath or fatigue during activity
These procedures can help improve blood flow to your heart and reduce symptoms.
How It Works
- A catheter is inserted through a small puncture in the wrist or groin.
- Contrast dye is used to highlight blocked areas in the arteries.
- A tiny balloon is inflated to open the blockage.
- A small mesh tube (stent) may be placed to help keep the artery open.
Most procedures are completed in under an hour, and recovery is usually quick.
Benefits of the Procedure
- Relief from chest pain or shortness of breath
- Improved heart function
- Lower risk of heart-related complications when treated early
Your provider will explain risks and answer your questions before the procedure.
