Nuclear Cardiology
What is Nuclear Cardiology?
Nuclear cardiology tests use a small amount of radioactive material to create images of your heart. These tests show how well blood flows through your heart and can help find blocked arteries.
Why is This Test Done?
Doctors use nuclear stress tests to:
- Check for coronary artery disease
- Find reduced blood flow to the heart
- Assess damage after a heart attack
What to Expect During the Test
- A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into a vein.
- A special camera takes pictures of your heart at rest and after exercise.
- If you can’t exercise, medication may be used to mimic the effects of activity.
- The test usually takes a few hours, but you can go home the same day.
Understanding Your Results
Your doctor will review the images to check blood flow to your heart. If reduced flow is found, more tests or treatment may be needed.
