Carotid Ultrasound
What is a Carotid Ultrasound?
A carotid ultrasound is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of the arteries in your neck. It helps check for narrowing or blockages that could lead to a stroke.
Why is This Test Done?
Your doctor may recommend a carotid ultrasound to:
- Detect plaque buildup in the carotid arteries
- Assess stroke risk
- Monitor known artery narrowing
- Evaluate symptoms like dizziness or vision changes
What to Expect During the Test
- A gel is applied to the skin on your neck.
- A small device (transducer) moves over the area to capture images.
- The test is painless and usually takes about 30 minutes.
- No special preparation is needed.
Understanding Your Results
Your doctor will review the images to check for any narrowing or blockages. If needed, they may suggest lifestyle changes, medication, or further testing.
