Medical Student Sub-I Opportunities

Emergency Medicine Sub-I Application

NOTE: At this time we are not offering clerkship rotations for students outside our affiliated institutions, however, we are offering audition rotations for any applicant interested in matching to emergency medicine. VLSO Tips (VSAS)

You will spend 4-weeks rotating through multiple Abrazo emergency departments in the Phoenix valley which will provide a diverse experience of patients, providers, and pathologies. We provide SLOEs as well as automatic consideration for our residency program based on your performance with us. Apply through VLSO

Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

You will spend 4-weeks at different Abrazo emergency departments focusing your time on learning ultrasound. This rotation will offer bedside US teaching as well as access to multiple US resources to provide a solid foundation in point-of-care Ultrasound. Apply through VLSO

Minorities in Medicine (MIM) scholarship

Our program is strongly rooted in the belief that we must play an active role in diversifying medicine. As part of a multi-pronged approach to addressing racial injustice in the healthcare system, we are offering scholarships of $500 to qualified fourth year medical students traveling from outside of Phoenix to rotate with us. Interviews with faculty are scheduled on Thursdays during the months of October- February.

You are welcome to attend the resident conference on Friday after your interview day. Please contact Natasha Brocks, our program coordinator, to schedule.

Welcome to the Abrazo Health Emergency Medicine Residency website! On behalf of our faculty and residents, I thank you for your interest in our program.

Abrazo Health supports 5 ACGME accredited residency programs including Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, and a Transitional Year across a five, major hospital system. Located throughout the Phoenix valley we see a diverse and growing patient population that provides our residents with incredible opportunities for learning and service to our community.

The Abrazo Health Emergency Medicine residency program took our first class of six residents in 2020. Although a relatively new program, the residency faculty brings years of medical education experience including expertise in the areas of ultrasound, medical research, medical technology, undergraduate medical education, emergency medical services, medical law, and emergency department administration. We are fortunate to additionally have the strong support of nursing, allied health, and hospital administration.

Having been involved in academic emergency medicine since graduating from the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California emergency medicine residency program in 2004, I was honored to be asked to establish this program a few years ago. I continue to feel honored as daily I get to work with an amazing group of people and watch our residents grow from nervous interns during orientation to emergency physicians commanding a resuscitation room as senior residents.

Dr. Jacob Gerstman, MD

EM Residency: University of Pittsburgh

Jacob Gerstman was born and raised in Tempe, Arizona. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from The University of Arizona with a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. There he tutored math, chemistry, biology, physics and taught the MCAT for Kaplan. He was then drawn to the Independent Study Program at The Ohio State University College of Medicine where he was able to work at an accelerated pace and finish the program early. This helped allow him to participate in biochemical research, go on medical missions to Honduras and Ecuador, and teach for the MEDPATH program. He also served as his class president and on the student body executive council. He did his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. There he served as an EMS physician for the city of Pittsburgh, being a first responder to cardiac arrests, large fires, prolonged extrications, and other serious events. He took his first position out of residency in the WellStar system in Atlanta, Georgia where he was also a Clinical Assistant Professor for the Medical College of Georgia. He is now back home in Arizona where he works at several of the hospitals in the Abrazo system and serves as the Site Director for the Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital.

Dr. Ilana Mayer-Hirshfeld, MD - Dr. Ilana Mayer-Hirshfeld was born and raised in Mexico City. She moved with her family to Los Angeles during high school. Afterwards she moved to Maine where she completed a B.S. in Biochemistry at Bowdoin College. She then went to medical school at the University of Miami in Florida. She moved to Phoenix for her residency training. After finishing residency she joined the Abrazo Health Network in 2021, working at multiple sites throughout Phoenix. Her medical interests include Social Emergency Medicine

Dr. Caleb Rees, MD, FAAEM - Dr. Caleb Rees was born in Dallas but lived in Tempe before growing up in Albuquerque. He graduated from the University of New Mexico and completed emergency medicine residency training at John Peter Smith Health Network.

His mother was a nurse, and her stories and career encouraged him to pursue medicine. Dr. Rees volunteered in the hospital when he was old enough (14) and took the EMT class during high school. He was licensed as an EMT the day he turned 18, which at one point made him the youngest EMT in New Mexico. Go, Lobos, green over red for life. He is a big sports fan and Diamondbacks season ticket holder. Go Cowboys! He enjoys mountain biking, weight lifting, and exploring.

Dr. Joseph Wood, MD JD - Joseph Wood is originally from Chicago, IL where he did his residency at Advocate Christ Medical Center and pursued his Juris Doctorate in 1991 at University of Chicago. He is the recipient of the prestigious Joseph F. Waeckerle, MD, FACEP "Founder's Award" from EMRA and has multiple awards for outstanding speaker recognition from his time at Mayo School of Continuous Professional Development. He is a world renown expert in ultrasound and continues to be a leader in his field of Emergency Medicine working with AAEM.

Dr. Francisco J. Andrade, MD - Francisco Javier Andrade Jr. (“Javi”) is a board-certified Emergency Medicine and emergency ultrasound fellowship-trained physician. Born and raised in Nogales, AZ, he stayed closed to home and completed his undergraduate and medical studies at the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. He then went to Carolinas Medical Center (Charlotte, NC) for his Emergency medicine residency before returning to Tucson, AZ to complete his Emergency ultrasound fellowship. His other clinical interests include global health and working with underserved Hispanic populations. Outside of work, his interests include traveling, snowboarding, scuba diving, and the outdoors.

Dr. Taylor McAuliff, DO- Taylor McAuliff is originally from Iowa. He attended Iowa State University for undergraduate studies and then received his Doctorate is Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University. He then completed his residency at Ascension Macomb-Oakland in Detroit, Michigan. Afterwards he joined Abrazo Health Network in 2021 working across multiple ED sites. He met his wife Kelsie while a student at Des Moines University, and she joined him in Phoenix after completing her residency in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Detroit Medical Center. His medical interests include toxicology and critical care medicine. He enjoys cooking, discovering and enjoying new restaurants with his wife, movies, and spending time with her and his wife’s dog Tinky.

EM Residency: Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital

Dr. David N. Ricks, MD - David N. Ricks, MD is a board certified Emergency Physician and serves as the Facility Medical Director and Chair of Emergency Medicine at the Abrazo West and Abrazo Buckeye emergency departments. He has worked for Abrazo as a staff physician since 2014. He completed his BS in technology management at Utah Valley University with an emphasis in automotive technology. He completed his medical studies at The Ohio State University and trained in emergency medicine at the MetroHealth/Cleveland Clinic Emergency Medicine Residency. Before his medical studies Dr. Ricks lived internationally doing missionary work and speaks Spanish fluently. Dr. Ricks has consistently been involved in administration at Abrazo West and Abrazo Buckeye since 2015 and has been involved in quality improvement in areas such as stroke, STEMI, and trauma care. In his spare time he enjoys cooking, hiking, and film photography.

Ty Bowman, MD - Dr. Ty Bowman is from South Florida where he attended the University of South Florida for undergrad. He received his Doctorate of Medicine from Ross University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency at Abrazo. Afterwards he joined the residency in 2023 as the Associate Director of Education and continues to work clinically at multiple sites in the Abrazo system as well as a few critical access hospitals on the Navajo reservation. His medical interest include critical care medicine and working with underserved populations. He enjoys fitness, hiking and spending time with his wife and children.

Grace Patel, MD - Grace Patel was born in the village of Pinner, England, and then grew up mainly in northern New Jersey. She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania and then performed rigorous clinical research for one year in New York City prior to attending medical school at Georgetown University. She graduated from the Abrazo Health EM residency, where she was part of the inaugural class and also served as Chief Resident. While she originally moved across the country to AZ to be with her husband who was stationed at Luke AFB, she loves the area and will stay on as an attending. Grace joined the core faculty team upon her graduation in 2023 and looks forward to continuing to build the residency program. Her EM interests include EMS, tactical medicine, and flight medicine. She and her husband Uddit recently welcomed their first child, Asher, into their family. In her free time, she enjoys walks with her son and Goldendoodle Yogi, recreational sports, international travel, and exploring local breweries.

Dr. Beth Pyle-Smith, DO - Dr Beth Pyle-Smith was born and raised in Southern California. After completing her Bachelors Degree in Biology and her Doctorate in Optometry, she moved to Arizona for better job opportunities and to be close to her aging grandparents. She worked at FHP (an HMO) for 8 years before joining Estrella Eye Care in 2001. She became a Diplomate of the American Board of Optometry in 2012, one of the first group of optometrists to earn this honor. She is an active member and a Past President of the Arizona Optometric Association, holding office as President in 2018-2019. She is also an active member of the American Optometric Association for over 30 years. She is currently Secretary/Treasurer of the Arizona Optometric Charitable Foundation and part of its Board of Directors for 3 years. She helps various organizations with vision screenings and community services when able. She actively supports and serves with the Military Support Foundation, providing food and items needed for the servicemen stationed away, and for their families left at home. She became an Adjunct Instructor for the Abrazo EM Residency Program in 2022, where she hosts the residents in her practice, teaching them the skills of assessing eye health, how to treat emergency eye issues, and learning how to use various instruments. Dr Pyle-Smith lives in Glendale, AZ with her husband Bill and two children, Madeline and Aaron, along with her corgi Ojo and a bunch of chickens! When she isn’t helping others, she loves to can the fruits and veggies from her yard, and spend time with family and friends.

Dr. Masood R. Mohammed, DO MS - Dr. Masood Mohammed is an Emergency Medicine physician originally from West Palm Beach, Florida. Masood attended the University of Miami (FL) where he completed a B.S. in Biology and later attended graduate school at the University of South Florida where he received an M.S. in Medical Sciences. Masood stayed close to home and completed his medical education at Nova Southeastern University before traveling north for Emergency Medicine residency at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. Prior to joining Abrazo Health, Masood also completed a Medical Education fellowship at Christiana Care Health System in Newark, DE. His clinical interests include medical education, educational technology, and wellness. Outside of medicine, Masood enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, and listening to podcasts.

Dr. Alexander Dydyk, DO MA - Dr. Dydyk was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. He completed his bachelor’s degree in biology from Arizona State University in Tempe, his master’s degree in biomedical sciences, as well as his Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. After graduating from medical school, he completed residency training at the Abrazo Family Medicine Residency Program in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served as chief resident.

After residency, Dr. Dydyk finished two one-year ACGME-accredited fellowships. He completed the Long Beach Memorial Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship Program in Long Beach, California, followed by the Allegheny Health Network Pain Medicine Fellowship in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 2023, he obtained his obesity medicine certification from the American Board of Obesity Medicine.

Dr. Dydyk’s free time is primarily spent with his wife, three young children, extended family, and friends. Hobbies include cooking, lifting weights, watching movies, and NBA basketball. His primary interest in medicine includes chronic and acute pain management, ultrasound and fluoroscopic guided intervention procedures, and patient wellness.

Lisa Felber, EMT - Lisa Felber is a native of Arizona, born and raised in Phoenix. She received her Associates in Criminal Justice and her Bachelors of Science in Crime Scene Investigation from Kaplan University. She then received her Emergency Medical Technician certification from Glendale Community College, where she was hired to be an EMT Evaluator for the EMT Program. She has 13 years’ experience working as a behavioral health technician. Before becoming our Program Coordinator, she worked as an Emergency Department Tech in our Abrazo Arrowhead emergency department! Lisa enjoys watching movies and sports, crafting and spending time with her family! Lisa is very excited to be a part of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program here at Abrazo!
