Abrazo West Invests $6.5 Million to Expand ICU and Increase Critical Care Access
12 new ICU beds will increase access to advanced critical care across West Valley and beyond!
WEST VALLEY – Abrazo West Campus invests $6.5 million to expand its Intensive Care Unit (ICU), adding 12 new beds to increase access to advanced critical care for patients in the West Valley and across greater Phoenix. The expanded unit will open in late November and increase the hospital’s ability to care for patients facing trauma, stroke, cardiac events, complex surgeries, and other life-threatening conditions.
For West Valley residents, this expansion means greater access to specialized, high-acuity intensive care close to home and near family during critical times.
The expansion also adds critical care capacity across the greater Phoenix area, allowing Abrazo West to support patient transfers from across the Valley when specialized care is needed, particularly during periods of increased demand such as the winter illness season.
“The West Valley continues to grow at a very rapid pace, so healthcare resources must grow with it,” said Rob Stantus, Chief Operating Officer, Abrazo West Campus. “This ICU expansion increases access to highly specialized care for our patients, supports our physicians and clinical teams, and helps ensure we are prepared to meet the region’s evolving healthcare needs today and in the years ahead.”
The ICU project builds on a series of recent Abrazo Health investments that also expands access to high-acuity care in the West Valley. Earlier this year, Abrazo Health opened a 46,000-square-foot, 24-bed Litchfield Medical Building, a unique campus that combines medical offices and an inpatient rehabilitation facility under one roof adjacent to the main hospital campus.
Abrazo West also recently earned certification as a DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center, the highest possible designation for stroke care. The distinction recognizes the hospital’s ability to provide rapid diagnosis, advanced treatment, and specialized care for the most complex stroke cases. Abrazo West is the only DNV-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center in Arizona west of Interstate 17.
“This ICU expansion is an important investment in Abrazo West Campus and the West Valley. Together with our Comprehensive Stroke Center capabilities, expanded critical care capacity strengthens Abrazo West’s role in providing advanced, high-acuity care for the region and ensuring patients have access to specialized treatment when every minute matters,” said Larry D’Amico, Group Chief Strategy Officer, Abrazo Health Arizona.
