Abrazo West Campus Acquires Latest Advanced Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ for Total & Partial Knee, Total Hip and Total Shoulder Procedures
Newest orthopedic robot allows surgeons to personally customize knee, hip, and shoulder surgeries!
GOODYEAR – Abrazo West Campus is pleased to announce the arrival of new, state‑of‑the‑art surgical technology aimed at expanding access to high‑quality orthopedic care for the community. The Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ system is transforming joint replacement by helping surgeons know more and cut less through advanced, data‑driven precision.
The $870k robotics investment enables surgeons to perform total knee, partial knee, total hip, and revision procedures using highly precise, computer‑assisted guidance. The platform also expands access to advanced robotic surgery for patients by replacing techniques that previously required conventional cutting. In addition, the system is positioned to support Total Shoulder procedures when the Mako robot introduces that capability next year.
The technology helps surgeons plan for improved outcomes, including less pain and quicker recovery times compared to manual surgery, supporting patients in returning to the activities they enjoy, faster.
“This Mako robot allows us to expand services at Abrazo West by advancing precision and customizing each surgery based on the patient’s unique anatomy,” said Christina Khoury, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Abrazo West. “This equipment is at the forefront of advanced technology, which is exciting to offer to the West Valley.”
The platform’s innovative capabilities allow surgeons to remove and replace old hardware with exceptional accuracy and to deliver more predictable outcomes, transforming procedures that once required open techniques. The system offers expanded clinical applications and enhanced performance compared to manual surgery.
Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase 85% between 2020 and 2030, yet studies show that approximately 20% of patients remain dissatisfied following conventional surgery, underscoring the importance of solutions that improve planning, accuracy, and outcomes.
“We are proud to continuously elevate the robotics program with the introduction of Mako 4 technology,” said Lawrence D’Amico, Chief Strategy Officer, Abrazo Health. “This investment reinforces a commitment to meeting the growing needs of patients across the West Valley with advanced technology, greater surgical precision, and more personalized orthopedic care.”
