Abrazo Scottsdale Campus Now Offering Highly Advanced Mako SmartRobotics™ for Total & Partial Knee, Total Hip and Total Shoulder Procedures
New orthopedic robot allows surgeons to customize knee, hip, and shoulder surgeries!
SCOTTSDALE – Abrazo Scottsdale Campus is pleased to announce the arrival of not one, but two new Mako SmartRobotics™ orthopedic robots transforming joint replacement by helping surgeons know more and cut less.
The $1.5 million dollar robotics investment will allow surgeons to perform Total Knee, Partial Knee, Total Hip and Revision Hip on patients and do other revisions that up until now required conventional cutting. The Mako robots will perform Total Shoulder as well next year.

The robots help surgeons plan for better outcomes like less pain and quicker recovery times compared to manual surgery, helping patients get back to the things they love, quicker.
The single system delivers more capabilities and applications and offers a premium clinical and operational experience when compared to manual surgery.
“Abrazo Scottsdale was asked to be part of what’s called a limited market release to perform Mako Total Knee Replacement surgery. I have been working to help improve the flow for surgeons during surgery and to develop the customizable part of the procedure that Mako brings to the operating room,” says Dr. Russell Cohen, orthopedic surgeon, Arizona Sports Medicine Center.
Dr. Cohen will use the new Mako robot to perform the first Mako Total Knee Replacement Surgery at Abrazo Scottsdale Oct. 30.
Total knee replacements in the United States are expected to increase 85% between 2020 and 2030, yet studies have shown that approximately 20% of patients are dissatisfied after conventional surgery.
“These robots allow us to expand our services at Abrazo Scottsdale by doing revisions of not only total hip, but knee and shoulder. These innovative platforms can now remove and replace old hardware with extreme accuracy and a more predictable outcome, and transform procedures that used to be open,” says Ruben Castro, CEO, Abrazo Scottsdale Campus.
“We are proud to offer this highly advanced Mako 4 technology to our patients,” said Castro. “This addition to our orthopedic services further demonstrates our commitment to provide the community with the best, most sophisticated healthcare, options and outcomes.”
