To provide an exceptional and supportive Transitional Year experience that builds clinical confidence, promotes professional growth, and prepares residents for success in advanced specialty training.

The mission of the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program is to provide a broad, rigorous, and supportive clinical education that develops confident, compassionate, and adaptable physicians. Through diverse clinical experiences, individualized mentorship, evidence-based practice, and service to our community, we prepare residents to excel in their chosen specialties and provide high-quality, patient-centered care.

PGY-1 annual salary: $66,390

• 4 blocks of Inpatient Internal Medicine-includes 2 weeks of Night Float
• 2 blocks at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus
• 1 block at Abrazo West Campus
• 1 block at Abrazo Heart Hospital
• 1 block of ICU with night float shifts at Abrazo West Campus
• 1 block of CCU at Abrazo Heart Hospital
• 1 block of Trauma General Surgery Abrazo West Campus
• 1 block of Cardiology at Abrazo Heart Hospital
• 1 block of Ambulatory Medicine at Abrazo Medical Group
• 1 block of Emergency Medicine (various locations)
• 3 blocks of Electives:
  Elective Options: Anesthesia, Bariatric Surgery, Dermatology, Diagnostic Radiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Infectious Disease, Interventional Radiology, Nephrology, Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Point-of-Care Ultrasound, Pulmonology, Rheumatology, Trauma Surgery, Urology and Vascular Surgery.

The primary site for this program is Abrazo West Campus, a 188-bed hospital located in Goodyear, AZ. Abrazo West has received Level I Trauma Center distinction. Residents rotate through the Medicine, ER and ICU service while at the Abrazo West Campus.

Residents also rotate through the Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, a 217-bed acute care hospital. Residents rotate through the Medicine and Surgery service while at Abrazo Arrowhead.

Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital serves as the site for the CCU and Inpatient Cardiology rotations. It is recognized by the American Heart Association via the Mission: Lifeline-Silver Award as a STEMI Receiving Center and is a Certified Chest Pain Center.

Residents also rotate through the Abrazo Medical Group clinics to fulfill their required ambulatory rotation experience.

Paden Hendrickson, MD
Transitional Year Program Director

Dr. Paden Hendrickson is the founding Program Director of the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program and has led the program since it welcomed its inaugural class in 2020. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and also serves as core faculty for the Abrazo Internal Medicine Residency Program. In addition to his educational leadership responsibilities, Dr. Hendrickson practices as a hospitalist physician at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital.

Dr. Hendrickson earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine residency training through the University of Iowa–Des Moines where we also served as Chief Resident.

As Program Director, Dr. Hendrickson is committed to providing residents with a broad clinical foundation, meaningful mentorship, and the skills needed to succeed in their chosen specialties. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children and traveling.

Leslie Easley, DO
Transitional Year Core Faculty

Dr. Leslie Easley has served as core faculty for the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program since the program welcomed its inaugural class in 2020. She is board-certified in Internal Medicine through the American Osteopathic Association and also serves as Associate Program Director of the Abrazo Internal Medicine Residency Program.
In addition to her graduate medical education leadership roles, Dr. Easley practices as an Internal Medicine attending physician at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital.
Dr. Easley earned her medical degree from Midwestern University and completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Sierra Vista Regional Health Center. She is dedicated to resident education and mentorship and to helping Transitional Year residents build the clinical knowledge, confidence, and professional skills needed for success in their chosen specialties.

Perminder Sanghera, MD FACP
Transitional Year Core Faculty

Dr. Perminder Sanghera has served as core faculty for the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program since 2024. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and serves as Associate Program Director of the Abrazo Internal Medicine Residency Program. He is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Internal Medicine at Midwestern University.
Dr. Sanghera is the founder and president of Desert Valley Medical Associates, a hospitalist group that has provided inpatient medical coverage at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus since 2005. He completed his Internal Medicine residency training at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit, Michigan.
Dr. Sanghera brings extensive clinical, academic, and leadership experience to the program and is committed to supporting the education, professional development, and clinical growth of Transitional Year residents. Outside of medicine, he enjoys traveling, hiking, and spending time with his wife and two children.

Ilana Mayer-Hirshfeld, MD
Transitional Year Core Faculty

Dr. Ilana Mayer-Hirshfeld has served as core faculty for the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program since 2025. She also serves as Associate Program Director of the Abrazo Emergency Medicine Residency Program. She joined the Abrazo Health Network in 2021 and practices Emergency Medicine at multiple locations throughout the Phoenix area.

Originally, from Mexico City, Dr. Mayer-Hirshfeld earned her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from Bowdoin College and her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She completed her Emergency Medicine residency through the Creighton University School of Medicine/Maricopa Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Her professional interests include social emergency medicine and caring for patients from diverse communities. As a Transitional Year faculty member, she is committed to helping residents strengthen their emergency medicine knowledge, clinical judgment, and ability to provide compassionate care in fast-paced clinical environments.

Christopher Gonzales, MD
Transitional Year Core Faculty

Dr. Christopher J. Gonzales has served as core faculty for the Abrazo Health Transitional Year Residency Program since 2025. He is a general surgeon specializing in trauma surgery and surgical critical care. He provides surgical care at Abrazo West Campus, serves as Surgical Intensive Care Unit Director, and is teaching faculty for the Abrazo General Surgery Residency Program.

Dr. Gonzales earned his medical degree from the University of Arizona College of Medicine–Tucson. His clinical experience includes caring for critically ill and injured patients and managing a broad range of general and acute surgical conditions.

As a Transitional Year faculty member, Dr. Gonzales helps residents strengthen their clinical judgment, procedural knowledge, interdisciplinary teamwork, and understanding of surgical, trauma, and critical care. He is committed to supporting residents’ clinical growth and preparing them for success in their chosen specialties.
