Back or Neck Pain Got You Down?
What Causes Spine Pain?
For many people, spine pain is caused by muscle spasms. Even though muscle spasms can be quite painful, this type of pain usually gets better on its own.
Back pain can also be caused by a breakdown in the structure of the spine (degeneration). This type of pain is more common in older people. Spine pain after an injury is more common in younger people. However, spine pain can affect people of any age.
Spine pain can also be caused by muscle tension, heredity, disease, infection, spine curvature, and even your occupation.
Risk Factors for Spine Pain
Anyone can have spine pain, but several factors can increase your risk, including:
- Age
- Heredity
- Smoking
- Diet and weight
- Fitness level
- Existing diseases
For example, "weekend warriors" (people who exercise after being inactive all week) are more likely to suffer painful back injuries than people who make moderate physical activity a daily habit.
