Abrazo hospitals add Internal Medicine, General Surgery residency programs

Oct 29, 2018

New graduate medical education programs now accepting applications

med studentsGLENDALE, Ariz. (Oct. 29, 2018) – Abrazo Community Health Network is launching two new medical residencies in an expansion of its graduate medical education programs. Abrazo’s new General Surgery and Internal Medicine residencies will add to the hospitals’ ability to attract and retain future physicians.

There will be 45 positions for the Internal Medicine residency and 15 positions for the General Surgery residency. The programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and are now accepting applications for rotations starting in July 2019.

Addition of two new residency programs demonstrates Abrazo’s commitment to expanding its teaching and research capabilities across the hospital network, according to Akil Loli, MD, designated institutional official for graduate medical education with Abrazo Community Health Network.

“This represents a watershed moment for Abrazo Community Health Network as we are able to combine excellent patient care with academic achievements,” said Dr. Loli.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus in Glendale will serve as the primary clinical site for both residencies.

“Expanding Abrazo’s graduate medical education programs will help meet the need for future generations of physicians in our communities,” said Dr. Loli. “Through our local physician leadership, Abrazo will have direction over the curriculum and residents’ hands-on training to suit our community’s needs and ensure quality and patient safety standards are met.”

Residents in both the Internal Medicine and General Surgery programs will work closely with specialists and clinicians at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital and Abrazo West Campus. Overseeing the program for Internal Medicine is Jason Klein, MD, and program director for the General Surgery Residency is William Arnold, MD. Michael Castro, MD, and Leslie Easley, DO, are associate directors for the programs.

“The Abrazo residency program will offer innovative approaches to training and collaboration in a clinical environment that will serve as the foundation necessary to be a leader in the medical field and a patient advocate in the community,” added Dr. Loli. “Our medical staff in all specialties emphasizes the highest level of patient centered care and clinical instruction.”

“Residents will have real-world learning opportunities with renowned cardiac and vascular specialists at Abrazo Arizona Heart Hospital, emergency and trauma training at the Level I Trauma Center at Abrazo West, and with the numerous disciplines offered at Abrazo Arrowhead. We are committed to providing quality care and a safe environment for each of our patients, as well as effective learning opportunities for our residents,” said Frank Molinaro, chief executive officer, Abrazo Community Health Network.

Abrazo has a long history of educating physicians. The Family Medicine residency program at Abrazo Central Campus just celebrated its 40th year of educating primary care physicians, many of whom continue to serve our local community.
