Abrazo Central Campus earns Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center certification

Jan 7, 2019

Hospital is first in Arizona to receive new certification for advanced stroke treatment

PHOENIX (Jan. 7, 2019) – Abrazo Central Campus is the first hospital in Arizona to earn Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center (TSC) certification. The hospital meets rigorous standards for performing mechanical endovascular thrombectomy (EVT), a specialized surgical procedure used to remove a blood clot from the brain during an ischemic stroke.

TSC is a new advanced certification that helps prehospital providers better understand hospital stroke capabilities and assist in regional EMS triage of stroke patients so that the patient gets to the right hospital for the right treatment.

Abrazo Central Campus Stroke teamStroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States and more than 87 percent of cases are ischemic strokes caused by a clot that cuts off blood flow to a part of the brain. These types of strokes are largely treatable if a patient gets to a hospital that can provide the right treatment in time.

Studies have shown the value of mechanical thrombectomy for large vessel occlusive ischemic strokes. For the best patient outcomes, it is important to have a diverse network of stroke-certified hospitals, so patients can get to the right location as soon as possible.

“Abrazo Central is continuously improving its capabilities and this certification is recognition of our stroke team’s relentless focus on strengthening the neurointerventional program at the hospital for the benefit of our community and beyond,” said Frank Molinaro, CEO of Abrazo Central Campus. “Every second is critical in minimizing the damage caused by a stroke. We are committed to following the best practices for treating stroke to help preserve more brain function and a better quality of life for patients after a stroke.”

The certification is granted from The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, in response to the need to identify hospitals that meet rigorous standards for performing endovascular thrombectomy.

“We are pleased to continue providing this excellent standard of care our patients have come to expect,” added Cindy Roberts, director of Neuroscience at Abrazo Central Campus. The hospital was evaluated during an onsite review for compliance with the TSC requirements developed with input from experts on comprehensive stroke treatment and stroke program management.

Eligibility for the certification means that the hospital was required to meet strict guidelines that include performing EVT on a minimum of 15 patients in the past year, or 30 patients in the past two years, and the capability to perform EVT around the clock, seven days a week. The hospital’s primary neurointerventionists, the physicians who routinely perform emergency mechanical thrombectomy, also must meet the highest standards of subspecialty training.

“Thrombectomy capable certification is great news for our community. It is an honor to be the first hospital in Arizona with the certification, thanks to the highly motivated, dedicated and hardworking folks on the neuro ICU, emergency and endovascular team,” said Dr. Ahmed El-Gengaihy, Abrazo Stroke Medical Director. “We have a great team and administrative support that made this happen.”

“With the recent advances in endovascular therapies for acute ischemic stroke, it’s important to recognize hospitals which can perform this critical intervention safely and effectively and we commend Abrazo Central Campus on this designation,” noted Edward C. Jauch, MD, chair of the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Hospital Accreditation Stroke Subcommittee.

Abrazo Central Campus also is a Primary Stroke Center certified by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and The Joint Commission, and recipient of the Get With the Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. These designations recognize the hospital for meeting the highest standards for stroke care.
