Abrazo Arrowhead Campus volunteer receives President’s Lifetime Achievement Award

Jun 14, 2017

Charlotte Wheatman volunteerGLENDALE (June 14, 2017) – Abrazo Arrowhead Campus honored long-time volunteer Charlotte Wheatman with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Wheatman, who has volunteered for 25 years at the hospital, received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for donating more than 4,000 hours of her time volunteering.  Abrazo Arrowhead Campus Chief Operating Officer Stephen Garner presented the award to Wheatman, 91, during a volunteer luncheon this month.

This is the highest award in the nation bestowed on volunteers who have donated at least 4,000 hours during their lifetime.  She received a President’s Call to Service Award Certificate and a pin to commemorate the event for donating at least 4,000 hours as of 2016.

“This is an amazing accomplishment that these volunteers are being honored by the President of the United States,’’ Garner said. “Throughout the year, volunteers play a key role at Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, helping out day to day and giving our patients a sense of community and a personal touch that lets them know their neighbors.

Wheatman, a Peoria resident, restocks linen and nutrition rooms, changes bed linens, delivers water and ice to family members and does general clerical duties.

“When I volunteer, I take care of things that frees up the nurses and hospital staff to spend time with patients. Volunteering is very satisfying. You’re doing something to help people and you also will meet many nice people,’’ she said.

Abrazo Arrowhead Campus, 18701 N. 67th Ave., is seeking more volunteers at the hospital. Volunteers can help in a variety of ways such as helping to escort family members, serve at the front desk provide golf cart shuttle service and help in the ER waiting area. They also can perform clerical duties, help at the surgical waiting guest relation desks and work in the gift shop.
