Although born in Elko, Nevada, Dr. Roberta Matern spent most of her formative years in Vietnam, Nepal and India, where her parents served as medical missionaries. Such an upbringing made it plain to her that surgery or family practice are the only fields to help the most people in the most practical ways. The Matern family already has its share of surgeons, so Dr. "Birdie " Matern, ever the individualist, took up family practice.
After medical school at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and residency at Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix, Dr. Matern moved to Memphis, TN for a year to complete The Fellowship in Advanced Women's Health, learning more about high risk pregnancies and getting training in C-sections. Her special interests in FP are obstetrics, patient education, and promotion of the values of our specialty. Some day she hopes to live and work in Asia again and/or perhaps on the Navajo Reservation, from where her ancestors came.
