Abrazo Health's West Valley Hospital Celebrates New Level 1 Trauma Center with Open House

PHOENIX, Ariz. (June 23, 2014) – Abrazo Health’s West Valley Hospital is preparing to open its new Level 1 Trauma Center in Goodyear, the first of its kind to serve the West Valley up to the California line.

Media and invited guests can get a first-hand look inside the new Trauma Center on July 1, just weeks prior to the doors opening to the public.

West Valley Hospital will become a state-designated Level I Trauma Center (WVL1TC) this summer after extensive preparation. It is situated 19 miles from the nearest Level 1 center in central Phoenix.

It will transform West Valley from a small community hospital to a select tertiary medical center with a focus on trauma and related services, said Stan Holm, West Valley Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer.

“The Trauma Center reduces travel time when minutes can mean the difference between life and death and when patient’s outcome lessens with every minute,” Holm said. “West Valley Hospital will provide the highest level of surgical care to the most critically injured and ill trauma patients using a full range of surgical specialist, support staff and specialized equipment available 24 hours a day.”

There are more than 50 surgical specialists including general surgery plus cardiovascular surgery, facial surgery, hand surgery, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery and plastic surgery.

There are currently five trauma centers in Phoenix designated Level 1 by the Arizona Department of Health Services, four of which are clustered within a few miles of one another in central Phoenix. In addition, there is one each in Chandler, Scottsdale, Flagstaff and Tucson.

An open house ceremony will be held July 1 to celebrate West Valley’s Level 1 Trauma Center which houses a 32-bed inpatient care unit, surgical suites and trauma bays. The Trauma Center expansion has been at least two years in the making and will give West Valley residents a new option for healthcare close to home.

Regional fire chiefs, EMS and first responders, medical staff and community leaders are invited to attend the ceremony which will highlight the new trauma services and technology that will be available at West Valley Hospital. Light appetizers will be served.
