PHOENIX (March 17, 2014) – Abrazo Health, the second largest health care delivery system in Arizona, announced today that Arizona Heart Hospital is the first in the state to begin using the FDA-approved Topera FIRMap™ Catheter, an advanced technology that assists in the diagnosis of complex cardiac arrhythmias, or irregular heart rhythms. Arizona Heat Hospital is the only facility in Arizona that offers the device.
The FIRMap™ Catheter is a three-dimensional heart mapping device that assists physicians in locating the source for cardiac arrhythmia. Unlike most linear catheters, the device features an expandable “basket” that conforms to the shape of a full heart chamber. Sixty four evenly-spaced electrodes create a three-dimensional map of the heart, which aids in identifying the sources of the arrhythmia. The technology allows for more effective diagnosis and treatment approach for a variety of arrhythmias including AFIB, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia and ventricular tachycardia.
Atrial fibrillation, or AFIB, is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm, a disorder that affects an estimated 2.7 million people in the United States. Patients with AFIB are 5 times more at risk for stroke.
“Arizona Heart Hospital is proud to be the first facility in Arizona to offer this technology,” said Steve Harris, President of Arizona Heart Hospital. “We strive to provide cutting-edge treatment options for our patients, so this is a testament of that commitment.”
Arizona Heart Hospital has been involved in the development of the FIRMap™ Catheter for the past several years. The availability of the procedure has attracted several national and international patients.
