First Anterior, Robotic-Assisted Total Hip Replacement in Arizona to be Performed at Arrowhead Hospital

9/24/2013 1:00:00 AM

Glendale, AZ (September 24, 2013) - Another FIRST-of-its-kind surgical procedure was performed at Arrowhead Hospital on Wednesday, September 18. Shane Martin, M.D., orthopedic surgeon with OrthoArizona, has become the first surgeon in Arizona to preform an anterior approach, robotic-assisted MAKOplasty Total Hip Arthroplasty. With this procedure, Dr. Martinis one of only a hand-full of surgeons in the world combining the muscle sparring anterior approach with the latest in robotic, total hip arthroplasty technology, MAKOplasty.

"This is an exciting time for Arrowhead Hospital," said Frank Molinaro, CEO, Arrowhead Hospital. "Partnerships with such innovative and cutting-edge surgeons like Dr. Martin are quickly making Arrowhead the premier robotic surgical hospital in the Valley."

The Anterior Approach to hip replacement surgery, which has been around since 1996, allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip as opposed to the lateral (side) or the posterior (back) approach. This way, the hip can be replaced without detachment of muscle from the pelvis or femur during surgery. Then adding the robotic-assisted MAKOplasty, the surgeon has the benefit of an individual, 3-D computer-generated model of the patient's hip, which provides real-time information that optimizes socket preparation and implant positioning and alignment.

"By combining both procedures, I am able to utilize a much less disruptive path to the patient's hip, then use the latest in robotic technology to prepare the socket and precisely place the implant," said Dr. Martin. "The benefits to the patient are numerous, and could potentially include less post-operative pain, quicker recovery, decreased risk of dislocation and leg length discrepancy."

There are more than 332,000 total hip replacement surgeries preformed each year in the UnitedSates, making it one of the most common elective surgeries preformed. So the potential benefits to this ground-breaking surgery could help alleviate debilitating hip pain to thousands of people who suffer daily from degenerative joint disease of the hip.
