First Single-Site Robotic Hysterectomy in Arizona to be Performed at Arrowhead Hospital

9/10/2013 1:00:00 AM

Glendale, AZ (August 13, 2013) - Arrowhead Hospital will be the site of Arizona’s first robotic-assisted single-incision hysterectomy. This cutting-edge procedure will be performed on Friday, August 16, and requires only one small incision -- less than one inch -- in the patient’s belly button. With this technique, there is virtually no scarring, very little blood loss, and quicker recovery compared to open hysterectomies.

Ivor Benjamin, M.D., and Dennis R. Scribner, Jr., M.D., gynecological oncology surgeons with Arizona Center for Cancer Care, will use the latest da Vinci® Si Surgical System to perform the surgery. The very first single-incision robotic hysterectomy in the U.S. was performed just a few weeks ago in Chicago. Drs. Benjamin and Scribner are two of only 25 U.S. physicians selected for the first wave of physicians trained in this innovative technique. And Arrowhead Hospital is, and will be, the only hospital in the West Valley to offer patients access to this latest advance in robotic surgery.

“To be one of the first hospitals in the region to offer this surgical innovation demonstrates Arrowhead Hospitals' commitment to providing our patients with the most advanced, minimally invasive, robotic surgical options,” said Frank Molinaro, CEO, Arrowhead Hospital. "We are proud of our partnership with physician's like Drs. Benjamin and Scribner, who's passion, commitment and drive are helping Arrowhead Hospital lead the way in offering the latest technological advances to our patients and community."

The surgeons using Arrowhead's da Vinci Si requires just one 2.5cm-incision in the belly button for this minimally-invasive surgery. There is no visible scarring on the outside of the patient’s body, and better results than other minimally-invasive techniques when it comes to internal scarring. Other benefits to this procedure, minimal blood loss and a much quicker recovery, so patients can return to their daily routine within a week to 10 days.
Hysterectomies are among the most common surgeries performed in the U.S., and the use of the robotic surgical approach was introduced about a decade ago. The singlesite surgery using the da Vinci Si robot was approved by the FDA for use in April 2013.
