(GLENDALE) May 5, 2010 - For the third straight year, Arrowhead Hospital’s Cardiac Surgery Program has been awarded the highest national ranking -- 3 Stars -- from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS). Less than 12% of hospitals nationwide received this year’s STS 3 star rating – the highest category of quality of cardiac surgery.
“Arrowhead Hospital is committed to delivering the highest quality care to our patients and the community, and receiving the Society of Thoracic Surgeon’s highest national ranking for a third year in-a-row clearly places Arrowhead’s Cardiac Surgery Program among the top programs in the nation,” said Jon Bartlett, CEO of Arrowhead Hospital. “This recognition builds upon Arrowhead being named a Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals®: Cardiovascular Benchmark Award winner; a HealthGrades Patient Safety Excellence Award (Top 5% Nationally) recipient; a Blue Cross/Blue Shield – Blue Distinction Centers for Cardiac Care and Knee & Hip Replacement; and a Beacon Award winner, which distinguishes our Critical Care Unit as one of the best in the nation. Arrowhead Hospital is leading the way for proven, exceptional patient care in the Valley.”
The STS developed this comprehensive rating system to allow for comparisons regarding the quality of cardiac surgery among hospitals across the country. The system analyzes many different national cardiac surgical data categories on a yearly basis to determine which hospitals meet its stringent qualifications for the 3 star rating.
“For each calendar year, from 2007 through 2009, our program ranked in the highest quality tier, thereby qualifying Arrowhead for this esteemed, STS 3 Star rating,” said Cynthia Fishel, Director for Cardiovascular Services at Arrowhead Hospital. “This rating solidifies that the work we are doing here at Arrowhead ranks us among the best-of-the-best cardiac surgery programs in the nation.”
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is a not-for-profit organization representing almost 6,000 surgeons, researchers, and allied health professionals worldwide who are dedicated to ensuring the best possible heart, lung, esophageal, and other surgical procedures for the chest. Founded in 1964, the mission of STS is to enhance the ability of cardiothoracic surgeons to provide the highest quality patient care through education, research, and advocacy.
