Special Procedures Laboratory

The Specials Procedure Laboratory at Maryvale Hospital is primarily used for the treatment and diagnosis of patients with peripheral vascular disease.

The new and improved specials procedure room was fully functional in November of 2006.

The most common procedure is the peripheral artery stenting. In this procedure, the interventionalist or cardiologist places a stent (a wire mesh tube) into a blocked peripheral artery. A peripheral artery is one that is located outside the heart or brain. Similar to a cardiac cath procedure, a stent is placed in the narrowed artery with a catheter. There the stent expands and locks open. It stays in that spot, keeping the diseased artery open.

The lab also serves as a back up room for Cardiac Catheterization procedures in cases that the Cardiac Cath room is being utilized. Pacemaker installation is also one of the cardiac related procedures performed in this area.

Procedures in the specials procedure room also include any procedure that needs fluoroscopic guidance by Interventional Radiologist such as Hemodialysis catheter, thoracenthesis, or difficult PICC.
