Great question! we are not a “GP” (General Practitioner), but we are Primary Care Physician / Provider (PCP). Our specialty is Family Medicine, and we went through a standard three-year residency training to earn that distinction. Some of us goes beyond to fellowship training in obstetrics, rural medicine, faculty development. The American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) certifies physicians as Family Physicians after they successfully complete an accredited residency program as well as pass a written exam. The ABFM also requires “Maintenance of Certification,” which means that we need to prove to them that we are continuing to educate ourselves at all times throughout our career.
