PHOENIX, AZ (December 11, 2013) -- Abrazo Health, the second largest health care delivery system in Arizona, has announced today that Arrowhead Hospital and Phoenix Baptist Hospital/Arizona Heart Hospital have been named two of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics. Truven Health Analytics is a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost and quality of healthcare.
The Truven Health 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals is an annual quantitative study that identifies the nation's best providers of cardiovascular service. Arrowhead Hospital and Phoenix Baptist Hospital/Arizona Heart Hospital were selected from more than 1,000 hospitals in the U.S. for achieving superior clinical outcomes.
The study, now in its 15th year, evaluates performance in key areas: risk-adjusted mortality, risk-adjusted complications, core measures (a group of measures that assess process of care), percentage of coronary bypass patients with internal mammary artery use, 30-day mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost.
If all cardiovascular providers in the U.S. performed at the level of this year's winners:
- 8,600 additional lives could be saved
- $1 billion could be saved
- 3,200 additional bypass and angioplasty patients could be complication-free
In addition, the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals also:
- Spend approximately $2,000 less per bypass surgery case
- Have significantly better 30-day survival rates
- Maintain lower 30-day readmission rates for heart attack and heart failure patients
- Release bypass patients nearly a day sooner than their peers
“The leadership shown by our physician teams and employees is proven by the exceptional care given to our communities every day,” said Ken Howell, president of Abrazo Health. “This great honor is an example of the hard-working, dedicated service the Abrazo medical team is committed to providing throughout our network of hospitals and health care facilities.”
"We are extremely proud to have earned the distinction of a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital," said Frank Molinaro, CEO Arrowhead Hospital. "Delivering the safest, highest quality care to every patient is what all of our staff and physicians strive to achieve. And to be recognized by an organization like Truven Health Analytics for exemplary performance in these key quality measures is gratifying to our entire team."
Dan Jones, CEO of Phoenix Baptist Hospital says, "This Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital award distinction is a huge honor for Phoenix Baptist Hospital/Arizona Heart Hospital and all of who work throughout the Arizona Heart Hospital campus," he adds, “it is further proof that on a daily basis our physicians, staff and administrators are focused not only on quality care but striving to achieve excellence and beyond in the name of our patients. This award is a great honor for the entire staff throughout our hospital community and we will continue to strive for daily excellence for ourselves and the care we provide the Valley.”
“This year’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals have delivered excellent care in a time of sweeping change in the healthcare system," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and the 100 Top Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics. “Their success is a testament to the strong focus by cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and cardiovascular service administrators and staff on basic care and outcomes.”
