Robotic Arm Technology Enables a New Level of Precision in Total Hip Replacement

(Glendale, AZ) -- (January 14, 2013) – Arrowhead Hospital is the first hospital in the state to offer the MAKOplasty® Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), the latest innovation in total hip replacement surgery performed using the RIO®, Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic System. RIO® is a highly advanced, surgeon-controlled robotic arm system that enables the accurate alignment and positioning of implants. Orthopedic surgeons at Arrowhead Hospital, are scheduled to perform the first MAKOplasty® Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) at the hospital on Wednesday, January 18.

The advantage to using this cutting edge robotic surgical technology provides the specially trained orthopedic surgeon a patient-specific 3-D reconstruction to pre-plan the patient’s hip replacement. During the procedure, tactile, visual, auditory feedback, and real-time data assists the surgeon in preparing the hip joint and placing the implants in the desired orientation with more accuracy.
