Arrowhead Hospital’s Critical Care Unit (CCU) was recently named a Beacon Award winner for Critical Care Excellence, placing it among the top critical care units in the nation. Arrowhead was one of only 32 Critical Care Units out of 5500 CCU’s nationwide awarded the spring 2009 Beacon Award. It was also the only hospital in Arizona to be given the award this year.
The Beacon Award is given by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), the largest specialty nursing organization in the world. The AACN evaluates units on specific criteria, including ethical leadership, staff training, healthy work environments, nurse recruitment and retention programs, evidence-based practices, patient outcomes and more. The Beacon Award process is rigorous and can take up to two years before some units receive their recognition.
“This is an outstanding achievement and honor for our Intensive Care Unit,” said Jon Bartlett, CEO of Arrowhead Hospital. “This prestigious award recognizes Arrowhead Hospital’s Critical Care Unit as being one of the best in the nation; and is another example of Arrowhead’s dedication to delivering the very best healthcare to our patients.”
The unit is made up of 24 critical care beds and provides care for patients with unstable or critical medical, surgical or cardiovascular illnesses.
“It is an honor to be recognized as a Beacon unit,” said Cynthia Fishel, Director for Cardiovascular Services and Critical Care. “At Arrowhead, being a Beacon unit means that patients and their families are provided the best possible care. It also means that every staff member does his or her part to make this a responsive, highly regarded and special unit.”
